How the outside of a building could help the environment?

Researchers are developing a covering for buildings that could collect water and help generate energy.

Better materials, advanced construction methods, creation of buildings that give us a state-of-the-art way of living, Architecture looking to the future…!

«I’ve been interested in the impact of new technologies on architecture since the early 1990s,’ explains Professor Spiller. ‘That was the start of cyberspace and virtual reality generally, and people started to talk about biotechnology.»

Professor Neil Spiller, an architect and head of the University of Greenwich’s School of Architecture & Construction, has a long history in futuristic architecture, and is currently working with researchers to develop a new covering for buildings. The research, conducted by teams from Greenwich, the University of Southern Denmark, University of Glasgow and University College London, could be extremely beneficial in hot climates, collecting water and using sunlight to collect biofuels.

Sustainability

‘We are at the stage where we are working on ideas on developing a special covering,’ says Professor Spiller. ‘We are trying to get some covering that uses new technology that will allow a building façade to respond in real time to changes in its micro-climate around it.’ Up until now the experiments have been done in the lab and they need to make it bigger to the building façade scale, however big that is. ‘There is a variety of things that we may use, such as bioluminescent bacteria. We’ll use the actual protocells in one experiment. With protocells there is no DNA, no genetics, they are really just bubbles in water, so there is no ethical problem there.’ The material has potentially significant economic and ecological benefits. ‘We have a technology that is not limited by the normal economics of the building industry that we have in the First World,’ says Spiller. ‘The big expansion in the construction industry in the next growth period is going to be about sustainability and ecological planning.’

How to Spot a Good Real Estate Agent

DSCN9766pA-e1510960125630

A good real estate agent should be communicative and proactive, a good listener and experienced professional with a list of satisfied clients!

Finding a good real estate agent isn’t always the easiest thing, and knowing what to look for can make a world of difference.

So what characteristics should you have in mind in order to spot a real estate agent that’s right for you?

1 As the adage goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, so it is essential to actually visit a real estate agent’s office. Emails and calls are great, but don’t assign your property to an agent before you’ve met them in person and visited their office. That first impression—the presentation of the agent and the office—should leave you feeling confident that you’re dealing with professional who respect themselves, their place of work, and their clients appropriately.

2 Communication is the most crucial factor in any transaction. Make sure from the get-go that your real estate agent is able to communicate well with you, that they are both pleasant and effective. You want to be sure that they’ll be able to communicate well with you throughout the process and that they’ll also be able to communicate well with potential buyers or owners of properties for sale as well. After all, when the time comes, they’ll also have to communicate effectively with any lawyers, engineers and notaries involved in completing the transaction. Make sure that they can communicate ideas clearly and in simple terms and that they’re able to provide answers and suggest solutions without fuss.

3 A good real estate agent should be proactive about staying in touch and keeping you updated at every step of the way— and they should do the same with potential buyers and sellers. Even the smallest detail could prove to be a decisive factor for a successful transaction, so be wary of agents that don’t seem too motivated to maintain good contact.

4 Make sure that the real estate agent actively listens to you and understands your needs. They should have enough to the-point questions to make sure they’re on the same page as you, and they should be able to give their professional opinion without pushing you in any direction.

5 Experience is another key factor that can make or break a transaction. What seems trivial to a new real estate agent could be just the detail that makes all the difference to an experienced agent.

6 Look for an agent who is well informed and up-to-date with trends and developments in the market you’re in. You want to work with someone who’s actively keeping an ear to the ground and always on the lookout for new leads and clients.

7 Ask for references. A good real estate agent should be able to immediately provide you with at least ten clients—from the previous 3 to 6 months—willing to provide positive references. Satisfied clients are the best indication that you’re dealing with a competent professional. To sum up, a good real estate agent should be communicative and proactive, a good listener and experienced professional with a list of satisfied clients.

The seas of «stars»…in the world!

Have the stars come down on shore?

nhyt6

Is it real or a fantasy land?

We can really swim in a sea of stars…a magical surprise in the Vaadhoo island, one of the islands of Raa Atoll in the Maldives, similarly, on the islands of Mudhdhoo and Rangali, Lakshadweep Islands in India, Mosquito Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico, and on the coast of Leucadia in California!

The above photo, (daily telegraph.com.au),  by Jervis Bay Australia, local Joanne Paquette has attracted the attention of one of the world’s most respected science and nature societies in the world.

As night falls on certain beaches around the world, the waves glow with an eerie blue light, neon dots that make it look as though stars are washing up the beach.

Unusual-Beaches

In Mexico there are beaches and lagoons that feature the natural “magic” phenomena known as bioluminescence, which are flashes of thousands of microorganisms (photo:theycatantimes.com)

It’s the microscopic organism called noctiluca and it is also known as the sea sparkle .It is one of the marvels of the ocean, the glowing is due bioluminescence, which takes place when the water is disturbed by oxygen.

puerto-rico

photo: Puerto Rico (Google). Bioluminescent bays exist very few in the world, in Puerto Rico, there are three.

As the phytoplankton float, movement in the water sends electrical impulses around a proton-filled compartment inside them; electrical pulses open the voltage-sensitive proton ion channels into scintillons (the flashing unit inside them.) The pH in the cytoplasm changes, creating a series of chemical reactions, which activate a protein called luciferase. When luciferase is mixed with oxygen, the neon blue light is created.

plankton1

The «sea of stars«, is actually consisted by millions of microscopic organisms called bioluminescent phytoplankton.

Some of the most spectacular photographs have been captured from one location, Vaadhoo island, (a tiny island with just over 500 inhabitants), Maldives, which has been nick named the sea of stars.

Bizarre bioluminescence off a San Diego beach

Vaadhoo island is famous for the “sea of stars.” This marine bioluminescence is generated by phytoplankton known as dinoflagellates. Woodland Hastings of Harvard University has for the first time identified a special channel in the dinoflagellate cell membrane that responds to electrical signals—offering a potential mechanism for how the algae create their unique illumination.

A Flower Garden in the Desert of Dubai!

A flower garden in the desert? Yes…In Dubai, of course!

The most impressive thing about the garden is that the whole operation is fed via recycled wastewater.

jpeg (1)

photo: Stephen Allan

Opened on Valentine’s Day 2013, the Dubai Miracle Garden, consisting of 150.000.000 individual flowers, is the world leader when we talk about enormous flower gardens!

c73df0e5c3724037c97daf7f501860c0 (1)

Photography by @jhim

The park currently includes at least 45 different species of flower imported from around the globe, many of which are difficult to cultivate in the desert and rarely seen in the Middle East, such as geraniums, marigolds, calendulas, and petunias.

IMG_4115

The Dubai Miracle Garden also holds the current Guiness record for largest flower arrangement. That award was bestowed in December 2016 for a floral structure in the shape of an Airbus A380 that’s 230 feet long (measures 72.95 m (233 ft 4 in) x 78.34 m (257 ft) x 21.98 m (72 ft 1 in), and includes more than 500.000 fresh flowers and plants, constructed over a frame built from recycled materials.

DJI_0039-HDR-2-copy-1150x646

The complex, (about 2 million square feet) includes retail stores, a mosque, a floral clock, and tha latest attraction, the region’s first butterfly circular garden, depicting nine domes covering 1,800 square metres and it has a capacity for 300 people.

img_4200

The climate-controlled domes, which can be open year round, are decorated with flower displays and are home to a range of thousands brightly colored butterflies in various sizes and species, just off Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

jpeg (2)

As well as the garden there is also a butterfly museum and a butterfly flower park built around a theme linked to the creature.

IMG_5004

Dubai’s Flower Garden also has a medicinal plant section and a fruits-and-veggies section. Guests are able to make their own salads and teas from the plants, with designated seating areas set up for this purpose.

IMG_4150 (1)

The idea is to educate guests on healthy, unprocessed, plant-based diets, as well as “mindful eating”—knowing what’s in your food and where the ingredients came from.

The Archaeological Museum of Thebes

DSCN9411

photos: Almablog

The Archaeological Museum of Thebes is one of the most important museums of Greece since some of its collections are rare or unique.

DSCN9546

The exhibits originate from excavations all around Boeotia and cover a long chronological period spanning from the Palaeolithic to the Post Byzantine periods.

DSCN9588

Thebes, in ancient Greek «Θῆβαι», is a Boeotian city, one of the oldest of Greece and among the few existing cities build before the Great Flood.

DSCN9398

According to myth, it is built by Cadmus, bearing great mythological importance.

DSCN9088

The general Epaminondas who made Thebes the ruling city of Greece, is among the most notable Thebans, as well as Pelopidas, the renowned leader of the Sacred Band.

DSCN9431

The acropolis of Thebes was called Cadmeia, since the city’s founder was Cadmus. The plural number of the name Thebes comes from the fourteen gates of the city, connected to Niobe by myth.

DSCN9497

The name Thebes was also used for the Egyptian city, at Karnak. This name is believed to be a derivative of the ancient Egyptian word for the city, “ta-pe,” in Greek.

DSCN9504

The new Archaeological Museum of Thebes occupies an exhibition area of 1.000 m2  and houses a multitude of artefacts, representing millennia of continuous human activity in Boeotia.

DSCN9391

The exhibition halls spread over two different levels, a choice dictated by the necessity to maintain the natural formation on the western slopes of the Kadmeia hill.

DSCN9149

The Museum extension and the configuration of the surrounding space were monitored by the architect Michalis Souvatzidis.

DSCN9395

The rearrangements include the repair and modernization of the existing building of 613,73 square meters, with the moderation of its old layout, the deposition of the neighbor structures (curator’s office, restrooms), the repair of various construction elements (coatings, colorations, false ceilings), air conditioning installation and the cladding with cement tile.

DSCN9462

The old building was integrated with the new extension so to look like one unity.

DSCN9175

The new extended part covers 2.692,23 square meters, with 1.390 square meters of semi open airs spaces, consisted of 3 basements, ground floor and rooms.

DSCN9397

This reconstruction includes retaining work with poles and reinformance coatings, digging, masonry, coverage, electromechanical installation, exterior landscape formulation of 1.749 square meters και backfilling  of ancient findings which were discovered during the digging of the building’s foundation and was decided to protect and preserve them.

DSCN9158

Modern Thebes is build right on top of the ancient city.

DSCN9422

Thebes was one of the most influential ancient cities of Greece.

DSCN9147

It is inhabited from Neolithic times and its heyday was in the Mycenaean period.

DSCN9037

Many remains of the ancient city are visible around the modern city, along with few parts of its fortifications build with big boulders on natural rock.

DSCN9040-A

Thebes is 45 Km from the capital of modern Boeotia, Livadia.
